s a cinephile I have always been most interested in horror films。 Any casual reader of this site can plainly see that。 I grew up in the 90′s， renting movies from the 80′s from my local mom & pop and blockbuster。 The big internet boom of the early 00′s helped fuel my hunt， leading me to more and more obscure films to uncover。 Then came Netflix and I finally had access to films that could only be purchased online， or at really cool stores， of which my town has none。 I tore through lists and filled s a cinephile I have always been most interested in horror films。 Any casual reader of this site can plainly see that。 I grew up in the 90′s， renting movies from the 80′s from my local mom & pop and blockbuster。 The big internet boom of the early 00′s helped fuel my hunt， leading me to more and more obscure films to uncover。 Then came Netflix and I finally had access to films that could only be purchased online， or at really cool stores， of which my town has none。 I tore through lists and filled my horror cup to the brim。 I became exhausted with the genre， trying out films that weren’t fun or good， just bad and boring。 I burned my fingers too many times and figured I had seen all the good and so bad its good stuff the trash bin had to offer。 I was wrong。 Very wrong。I have since dug even deeper thanks to niche dvd labels but what about the pit of vhs crap-ola？ In comes this fantastic book reviewing sorta-obscure films like The Pit to the ultra obscure like Mutilations。 300+ reviews of the great stuff lurking in basements， attics， and garbage cans。 The book is a treasure trove of wonderfully funky and strange horror films。 The type of stuff that could only be made in the 80′s on a zero budget in the middle of nowhere。 The zany， the outlandish， the gory， the sleazy， it’s all here。 More important than the selections is the writing itself。 Casually picking up the book to read a few reviews I found myself smiling ear to ear and laughing out loud to the short but sweet prose by writers Joseph Ziemba and Dan Budnik。 Cinephile in-joke references， creative descriptions of how mindblowingly bizarre some of these films are， to great trashing of the trash。 It’s a book that’s hard to put down and that’s saying a lot for book full of reviews for films you’ll have to put on your Indiana Jones hat and whip to unearth。The reviews for the films I have actually seen are spot on and made me want to revisit them。 There’s also tons of great photos from the films including crazy box art， makeup， and of course boobs。Bleeding Skull: A 1980′s Trash-Horror Odessey is an excellent， fun， and comprehensive collection of slimy sleaze reviews that is indeed an odyssey。Thank god physical media isn’t dead。 I’m so glad I live in a time when a publisher like Headpress can release a book like this for all of us to enjoy。 It’s great that in this case the internet helps facilitate the sale of this book without completely making it irrelevant。 This belongs on your shelf right next to your Psychotronic books and Deep Red back issues。 。。。more
